The Citizenship Chronicles, #12

Got the interview date!!!!! Monday, November 5. Ironic on two levels: it is the day before the election, and one of the main reasons for my starting this process was that I wanted to be able to vote. Oh well. And, well, November 5, that is a HUGE day in England - Guy Fawkes Day/Bonfire Night.  I almost feel like a traitor, interviewing to become the citizen of another country on such an important date in the English calendar. Click here if you know nothing about this day (and to most Americans it is as mysterious as Boxing Day). But briefly, as far as fireworks are concerned, November 5 is the equivalent of July 4. I know, chronically stupid day to have to go outside to watch fireworks. In fact, before I came to the States, all my memories of fireworks were associated with freezing temperatures. My first July 4 over here, it felt so strange to be seeing fireworks without chattering teeth and layers of warm clothing.

  1. That is so funny--I wonder if they picked it to see whether you could get through the interview on such an important day from your birth country?
